Our Captain of Choice is Michael Domican. Michael holds both a USCG Master License and the RYA Yachtmaster Instructor License.michael-domican

Michael learned to sail as a Sea Scout on the south coast of England and summer holidays on his father’s ‘yacht’ – a 26’ wooden sloop, built in the 1930’s.  While attending University in London, he continued honing his sailing skills racing 30-55’ keelboats racing between England and France.  For contrast, one summer vacation he got worked as a deck hand on a North Sea oil rig tender.

After school, Michael crewed on a variety of sail and power yachts in Britain, the US and the Caribbean.  Favourite vessels were; ‘Mildred’, an engineless oyster dredging cutter ,  ‘Evrika’, a classic S&S Swan 65 and ‘Kalizma’, a 165’ luxury motor yacht once owned by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

In 1981, Michael won a place with the ‘Victory’ team preparing for Britain’s entry in the 1983 America’s Cup.  Over two years, he sailed on Twelve Metre sloops almost every day out of Nassau, Bahamas (fall and winter) and Newport R.I. (spring and summer).  His final position in the crew was mainsheet.

‘Victory’ didn’t live up to her name.  She lost to ‘Australia II’ in the Louis Vuitton Cup final so effectively coming in third in an event where they don’t give bronze medals!  But during the regatta, Michael saw the benefits of sponsorship for a sport and for sponsors.  So after the event finished, he joined a company called Octagon to learn the business aspects of integrating sponsors with major events that attract their customers.  From 1984 through 1995, Michael worked on events that ranged from 1985’s Live Aid concert to soccer’s World Cup ’94.  In 1995, realizing that the Internet was going to be a new medium for sponsors to connect with customers, Michael switched to online marketing with stints at DoubleClick where, as their first Sponsorship Director, he developed some of the Web’s first sponsored content areas and Agency.com where he managed British Airways’ North American interactive advertising.

The ups and downs of the dot-com industry coupled with the events of 9/11 caused Michael to re-evaluate what he wanted from the rest of his career.  At the start of 2002, he decided to return to his first love: sailing.  His hope was that he could apply his people, presentation and team-building skills to good use as an instructor. After completing his Instructor Trainer Courses with US Sailing (and passing his US Coast Guard Master exams) Michael joined Offshore Sailing School at their Manhattan location and then transferring to their British Virgin Islands branch in October that same year where he supervised and taught as director and chief instructor.  After nine years with Offshore, Michael left to work as an independent sailing coach and skipper and has continued to be based in the Virgin Islands where he lives with his wife and son.
